Le ‘Koedoe’ / The ‘Koedoe’

We are in Laren, a pretty village in the Netherlands in 1945, just after the war. Here lives a young woman who survived Nazi persecution but lost her husband, parents, sister and other loved ones murdered in Auschwitz. She only has her 8 years old son. A survivor of Auschwitz, and friend of her gassed husband, finds her. On October 22, 1946, a child was born of their union: me! And I am the baby posing with Mom, on the radiator of the old FIAT 514 Spider of the couple, a car dating from 1929, nicknamed ‘Kudu’ by my parents, because it is a robust, tireless and fast antelope, written ‘Koedoe’ in Dutch..

Avant-guerre, papa était mécanicien an aviation.

Before the war, Dad was an aviation mechanic. He loved pampering the old car. It is only natural that I watched him do it. And on this photo of the summer of 1948 (I am a year and a half old) I try to help him.

It was therefore logical that I deserved to put myself at the wheel of the venerable car!

1948-koedoe2

Automne 1948.

Autumn 1948. I’m just two years old and I’m no higher than the wheel! To the right, my brother Rolf, nine years older than me. Doesn’t the muzzle of the car remind you of something? It was in my subconscious that slumbered the image of this automobile of my childhood. With the 201 I find the same type of car. I’m just a little taller and older now.

A year later, still in love with ‘Koedoe’. I remember its colours: gray, with orange threads.

1949-koedoe

Still in 1949: Am I already dreaming of car raids?

It’s 1950. Dad has just repainted the car: off-white and green wings. He is very proud of his Koedoe, and I, on the left, am very proud of my Dad!

The year:1953. We go on holiday in France, the Koedoe towing our caravan. From l. to r.: Mom, and Rolf and I in the trunk seat.
