Jour 21 / Day 21 – Neuf-Brisach – Breuschwickersheim – 127 km (total 2768 km)

0-NeufBrisach-Breuschwickersheim-127km

We started the day with a walk in Neuf-Brisach. We come across a mysterious statue of a king brandishing a mug of beer. Here is its story. The statue represents Gambrinus, the legendary patron of beer who was said be the son of Henry III and who improved the recipe for beer by adding hops. Its use was later prescribed to all brewers by the order of 1495 of the King of France Louis XI. It was the German brewery Riegel which had the statue made and the house built in 1899, as an annex brewery for the German soldiers stationed in the Neuf-Brisach garrison.

Who was Antoinette Lix ? Marie-Antoinette Lix (31 May 1839 – 14 January 1909) was a French governess and heroine of the 1863–64 January Uprising against Russia who later fought in the Franco-Prussian War. She was born in Colmar to François-Antoine Lix and Françoise Schmitt. She was given a full military education by her father, who later sent her to Sisters of Divine Providence in Ribeauvillé to be further educated. After graduating as a teacher, she became a governess with a Polish noble family in Szycz. She joined the Polish insurrection against Russia in 1863, acted as a courier on the side of the Polish rebels, but was captured by the Russians and then released. She returned to France in 1866. Following the Battle of Sedan in the Franco-Prussian War, Lix attempted to join the French Army under General Pierre de Failly, but women were not permitted to fight. She did, however, join the snipers in Lamarche as a lieutenant before joining General Albert Cambriels’ troops. / In front of the Geneva Lake museum, a strange buoy with a fascinating history. It was the floating mast, a metallic sphere about two meters in diameter, ballasted with water, and on which a five meters high pole with rungs was attached. Bathers could climb and swing on the installation which, like a giant tumbler, always straightened up and oscillated back to the vertical. Manufactured in 1929 (the year the “201” was born!), this floating mast was installed off the beach of Lausanne-Ouchy. This brilliant and popular lake attraction, disappeared in the depths of Lake Geneva after the establishment went bankrupt in 1939. Spotted at the bottom of the lake some thirty years ago by Jacques Piccard and the pilot Roger Thiébaud on board the F. A. Forel submarine, the project to bring it to the surface was gaining ground … After long months of research using sounders and an underwater robot, the metallic sphere with an estimated weight of 350 kg and ballasted with water, which rested 122 meters deep off Vidy, was brought to the surface in 2017.

I collect « La Charmante » from Patricio, the mechanic. With the car on the bridge, he shows me several oil leaks. « They shouldn’t be there, on an overhauled engine, » he tells me, « it’s b een a job too quickly done. » He also draws my attention to the fact that the clutch pedal comes in contact with several electric cables. / We descend to Villard-Bonnot, and visit the remains of the paper factory founded in 1869 by Aristide Bergès. In a first move,  Bergès installed a wood rasp here, using hydraulic energy to operate his shredders (devices that grate wood to make pulp). For this purpose, he established a penstock with a vertical drop of 200 meters using the Lancey torrent. The water captured there then operated a turbine, driving the factory’s machines. In 1882, he added a stationery unit to his grate, installing a penstock with a drop of 500 meters and adding a Gramme dynamo to his turbines to produce electric current and light his factory. He presents the advantages and benefits that can be drawn from this renewable energy that he exploits in his factory and which he baptizes “white coal”, during the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1889.

Jour 16 / Day 16 – Chichilianne-Le Petit Mont- 86 km (total 2066 km)

0-Chichilianne-Petit Mont-86km

Before leaving, “La Charmante” asks me if she can pose one more time on front of Mount Aiguille. “Find me a green meadow with yellow flowers, that would go so nicely with my colours”, she whispers with her engine idling quietly. One cannot refuse what such a handsome old lady asks you, so here we are again in  front of the legendary mountain which does striptease, slowly evaporating its morning mists.

Nearing Grenoble, we reach the locality of VIF, which means “lively” in French…

2

When we are only 7 km away from Le Petit Mont, where we are awaited by our friends Axelle and Daniel, we think that the leg of the day is almost over. Wrong! The last 7 kilometers turn out to be a gruelling 10 to 20% slope. “La Charmante” climbs slowly, in first gear, at 15 km/h. I have one eye on the narrow mountain road, the other one on the temperature gauge, which indicates ever higher values… 80°C, 85°C, 90°C… When at last I find a flat spot where I can stop the car, the engine is at 95°C. We wait for the temperature to drop to 80° before continuing. We make a second stop in front of the church of La Chapelle, where we chat with an old couple who have come to admire “La Charmante”, while we wait for the temperature to drop again.

Back home, we watch from the terrace how the night slowly envelopes the valley below, the mountains of the Vercors and the Chartreuse beyond. / The Croix-Haute pass…  My memory goes back 58 years, on almost the same date. In September 1962, I was only 15, I travelled this same route with my 49 ccm Peugeot BB Griffon moped. That was on my very first voyage, from Southern France, where I lived then, to my elder brother in The Netherlands. Almost 1400 km in 3 days! One year later, I undertook the same trip, with a 125 ccm Vespa this time. No GPS yet, but this plywood panel fixed on top of my luggage and the roadsigns along my way. For a change, I had chosen the Bayard pass to reach Grenoble.

“La Charmante” in front of Mount Aiguille (2085 m). The legend says that before, it was a peak, but that is has been worn flat by a bird that comes here to hone its beak once each century. 0-Aix-Pertuis-38km

This is no doubt the shortest leg of our trip. A resting day in Aix, where Marie-Xavier lived during her adolescence. The pleasure of spending a moment with Jean-Luc and Isabelle, very close diving friends. 0-Jour10-Villetritouls-GdeMotte-187km

Just to make sure, Jean-Gab and I wanted to check the tighting of the cylinder head bolts at 6 Newton. For that, it was necessary to dismantle the dynamo first. Everything seemed to be in order, and it was time to say goodbye to our new friends Michèle and Jean-Gabriel, where we have been received like royalty.

20200906-4095

So here we are on the road again. But after barely 15 km an awful rattling sound is heard under the hood. The new starter engine? I stop urgently on the side of the road. Inspection done, it turns out to be the dynamo. We had forgotten to retighten the bolts that secure it to the engine block. Once the bolts gone, the dynamo wandered in all directions, even breaking a part of the base on which was fixed.

20200906-4097

Now what ? Jean-Gab not being too far away, I call him. He comes to our rescue. The two of us inspect the damage done.

20200906-3546

Eh bien, je me débrouillerai !]. Ouf ! Merci Jean-Gab pour le «service après-vente» !  / We fix the dynamo, but when I start, there still is this terrible  rattling din. The rubber shock absorber between dynamo and water pump has to be changed. Jean-Gab leaves again for another trip back and forth to bring the part from his stock. [Question: How am I going to manage if something similar happens in Lapland or Poland? Well, I’ll manage!]. A new start. Still the sound of the dynamo hitting against the engine. We wedge a piece of strap between the two. It works ! Phew! Thank you Jean-Gab for the “after-sales service”!

20200906-3543

À partir de là, tout roule à la perfection : le nouveau GPS fonctionne, le moteur ronronne, la température reste stable (80°C), la pression d’huile est bonne (2,5 à 3 bar) la dynamo charge comme il faut (12 Ampère)  / From there on, everything runs perfectly: the new GPS works, the engine purrs, the temperature remains stable (80 ° C), the oil pressure is good (2.5 to 3 bar) the dynamo is charging properly (12 Ampere)

Mais c’est aussi cela, l’aventure ! / In the evening, we arrive at Magali and Ariel’s, and their daughter Rebecca, lifelong friends. We are halfway on our journey. The day was hot in every sense. / Last night, I received a call from Sébastien. We should have met in 2016, when Marie-Xavier and I were doing the Tour de France with “The Little One”. Sébastien was to come with his freshly restored 4CV to join us somewhere in the Pyrenean passes. But there was a setback and it did not happen. As he lives only 10 km from Frouzins, he meets us at Kiki’s. His 1950 4CV is a marvel! We decide to travel some kilometers together.

Family picture before leaving : me, Simon, Marie-Xavier and Kiki.

But when I want to start, the starter makes a strange noise but does not pull the engine. I open the hood and take out the tools.

As I cannot find the cause, I start the engine with the crank.

We are finally on our way. / From that moment on, “La Charmante” is on her own again on France’s small roads.

20200905-9749

We make a small detour through the City of Carcassonne.

20200905-9750

Marie-Xavier joins Jean-Gabriel, to finally breathe fresh air and not the stifling heat of the cabin of « La Charmante ».

20200905-9753

We drive to Jean-Gab’s house, located in an isolated place of the Corbières, between scrubland and valley. We meet Michèle, his partner and Magali, a friend. Lively discussions around multiple topics. Jean-Gab’s career is atypical: after working as a graphic designer, he retrained and became a shepherd for 38 years.

And now he’s one of the few 201 specialists on our route. Which is a good thing: we still have to solve the riddle of the starter. Here he is plunged under the hood.

20200905-9757

On l’adapte. / We disassemble the starter engine, we test it. It works on the workbench, but once mounted into the car, the problem is still there. We call Jean-Luc in Dijon, Manu in Aignes. It seems that it is a problem with the springs, impossible to repair on the spot. Jean-Gab searches his reserves and finds me another starter-engine. We adapt it. In all, we have dismantled and mounted the starter engine three times – my arm is sore (a starter engine weighs as much as a dead donkey!)

20200905-4079

Mais le résultat est là : ça marche ! Merci l’expert ! / But the result is there: it works! Thank you, Mr. Expert! We end the day with a meal and lively discussions under the wisteria.

Jour 8 / Day 8- Aignes-Frouzins – 44 km (total 1221 km)

Today, a mini trip, of only 44 kilometers, back to the Toulouse suburbs, in order to visit Marie-Cristine, also known as « Kiki », one of Marie-Xavier’s cousins.

We must say goodbye to Martine and Manu, strangers less than 24 hours ago, friends now that we will be happy to meet again at the first opportunity.

On the way to Toulouse, our faithful GPS – undoubtedly under the influence of the negative waves sent by the purists of the “Friends of Peugeot 01” forum – gives up. We make a stop in a shopping center to buy another one… which ends up taking us safely to Kiki’s place.

Jour 7 / Day 7- Lalbenque-Aignes – 172 km (total 1177 km)

We spend the morning with Claire and her nephew Xavier. Claire is a diving friend. A lifeguard at 18, and a diving instructor at 25, Claire is crazy. Crazy about fish, that is. And other sea creatures… In front of her house situated in a magnificent oak grove sits a three meters high multicolored octopus. And in her house everything is reminiscent of marine life. The dining room table, chairs, sinks, WC cover, clock, coat rack, cupboard, screen, porthole windows and stained glass, hundreds of knickknacks – EVERYTHING is decorated with marine animals in bright colors!

Claire

In her garden, aquatic life isn’t lacking either.

20200903-9677

Nous faisons un petit tour à Cahors. L’homme d’État Léon Gambetta, né ici en 1838, semble indiquer le chemin à «La Charmante».  / We go for a spin in nearby Cahors. French statesman Léon Gambetta, born here in 1838, seems to show the way for “La Charmante”.

20200903-9681-cahors

We hit the road again. It’s hot. I make the mistake of not going around Toulouse on the small roads. We cross the city in the middle of rush hour. Thousand stops at traffic lights, an ordeal.

0-Jour7-Lalbenque-Aignes-172km

Finally we progress again on a good road shaded by plane trees.

20200903-4066

At 7 p.m., one hour late, we reach Manu at the six-winged mill in Nailloux.

20200903-9685

Manu, known on the “Friends of Peugeot 01” forum as “Technical Director”, owns a 201 of the same model as “La Charmante”. He was the one who sent me several parts for the restoration of the engine and the brakes.

20200903-9719

We are warmly welcomed by Manu and Martine in their magnificent old farmhouse in Aignes, with a view of the Pyrenees. After which, the two « 201 » go fo a little spin.

20200903-9693-aignes

Sunset behind the pigeon loft of Bouissou in Cintegabelle, built during the 15th century and listed as a historical monument on October 22, 1946… my birthdate!

Not far from there, Manu introduces me to members of his family who are harvesting corn and reworking the fields with their enormous agricultural machinery.

20200903-9701

A gigantic combine harvester passes behind the two « 201 » in a cloud of dust.

20200903-9700

It is driven by Michel, Martine’s brother. He invites us aboard this truly rolling factory. In front of me, in the light of the headlights, the corn plants are torn up and swallowed by the jaws of the machine, and behind me a rain of corn grains pours into the belly of the machine.

20200903-9704

Once the stomach is full, its contents are released in a dumpster.

20200903-9708

On fait nos adieux. Temps de rentrer dîner chez Martine ! La moissonneuse-batteuse s’éloigne dans la nuit. / We say goodbye. Time to go home for dinner at Martine’s! The combine pulls away in the night.

Jour 6 / Day 6- Saint-Julien-de-Lampon- Lalbenque – 81 km (total 1005 km)

We drive to Salviac with Claude and Fabienne, in order to visit the Museum of Agricultural and Automotive Machinery, with their collection of over 200 cars, motorcycles, tractors and hundreds of agricultural machines.

A beautiful collection of several 4CVs – I am thinking of “La Petite”, and my many trips with her: the Méridien Zéro, the N7, the Alps, Paris-Gobi, the Tour du Monde, the Tour de France… Here we are at the start new adventures, with “La Charmante” this time!

20200902-9635-Salviac

While going for lunch in Salviac, I discover that the bolt which is the hinge of the two doors on the right side has come undone … Another compliment to my German mechanic: if he is not able to fix a door, are we soon going lose the exhaust, a wheel, or the gearbox?

20200902-9654-portiere

Portière réparée, déjeuner dégusté, on reprend la route. Nous traversons de jolis petits villages… / Having repaired the door, after lunch, we take to the road again. We cross nice little villages…

Jour 4 / Day 4- Vichy-St.Julien-de-Lampon – 278 km (total 916 km)

Jour4-Vichy-StJulienDeLampon-278km

You can say what you want, but long live Internet and long live FaceBook! Yesterday, thanks to my FaceBook page and thanks to my blog, I was contacted by Évelyne. She lives in the Vichy region and breeds horses and dogs there. But who is this mysterious lady? The little sister of Philippe, one of my high school friends with whom I have always kept in touch. I keep the memory of a little blonde angel, rather introverted and shy, not surprising when you are four years old and the noisy band of the big brother’s put on a party …

She offered to come and greet us in Vichy and have breakfast together. So there she is, entering the hotel lobby with a determined step. Half a century later, we recognize each other immediately. But no hugs… because of COVID! The little blonde angel of yesteryear has become a willful woman with a strong voice. One senses the person who knows how to dominate animals and not let herself be fooled by men.

She sums up her life. A solo round-the-world trip, backpacking, working here and there to pay for the trip. A passionate woman, tasting life, astonished at the lack of motivation in so many young people. I’m so impressed with ‘my little blonde angel’ that I forget to photograph her portrait. But here’s one of my motivations for traveling: meeting people …

We set off again. So does the rain… In the region of the Auvergne volcanoes, several steep hills, climbing and descending at 6%, 10%, 12% (!) Put “La Charmante” and her crew to the test. I sometimes have to downgrade to 1st gear and even there, we feel that the car is reaching its limits.

We pass a small village called « Cellule ». For the former biology teacher that I am, a must. We turn around and Marie-Xavier immortalizes the biologist-traveler.

Batterie totalement vide ! / In Burgundy, two days ago, Jean-Luc (“Babycid”) recommended that I drive with the headlights on from time to time to prevent the battery from overcharging, heating up and evaporating its electrolyte. I thought that for safety sake, I might as well leave them on all the time. On my dashboard, the ampere-meter always indicated a small charge of 2A while driving. But this time, when we wanted to restart… nothing happened! The battery was totally empty! Never mind, I have a crank. And there, I come across the umpteenth disappointment created by the German mechanics: the crank no longer passes through the hole provided for … Well, it almost passes. A few blows of the hammer and it passes, phew! A turn of the crank and the engine starts immediately. But impossible to remove the crank now! I fix it temporarily with a bungee cord (never travel without!). We’ll solve this problem later.

Sometimes we spot along the roadside, advertising frescoes that are decades old. With the patina of time, they have become true works of art. Here is the ad for IGOL lubricants, a brand created in 1949. « La Charmante » was already 19 years old by then!

The weather is gradually improving, as we whirl around the small winding roads of Corrèze, then Dordogne. At six o’clock in the evening, we disembark at the home of our long-time friends, Fabienne and Claude in Saint-Julien-de-Lampon. A delicious evening around a tasty meal and the equally tasty stories of the inexhaustible Claude. But after a long and difficult 278 km trip, we crave for our bed. Outside, in the night, sleeps « La Charmante ». She also needs a rest…
