Pourquoi une ‘201’ ? / Why a ‘201’?

People keep asking me why this model, rather than another brand or model. It’s a long story, dating back to 1949! But let’s start with 2007. With my friend Igor Zadevalov, we are near the end of the first big stage of the first big trip of ‘La Petite’, my 1959 Renault 4CV, destination China. Approaching Lake Baikal in Siberia, we meet Elise Pette and Fabien Hamm aboard their 1924 Citroën 5HP ‘Trefle’, who make the same trip as us, but in the opposite direction. I must admit that they are courageous to undertake a journey of 16,000 km aboard this small 83 years old car, nicknamed ‘The Old Lady’! Is this the first incentive that made me want to go on a long trip with a very old car? Who knows ?

On July 15th, 2010, accompanied by Anna, my first co-pilot, I take to the road, in New York, with ‘The Little One. This is the first day of a 33,500 km world tour that will take me seven months (see elsewhere on this site). The next day, in the city of Colonie, still in the state of New York, we see a beautiful old car with which we manage to catch up. It is a 1930 Ford A superbly restored by its owners, Tom and Beth Keegan. I have ‘La Petite’ posing next to this beautiful ancestor to take some pictures.

Back home, during the year 2011, a new idea is shaping in my head. Seduced by the Ford A, I begin to dream of buying one somewhere in the United States, to make a great tour of the country with it, then sell it. I even design a logo, in which the ‘A’ of the model also becomes that of the USA.

Then, realising the administrative difficulties that it would entail (for instance how to buy and put in one’s name a car in the United States if one is not domiciled there), I abandon this utopian dream. The years go by…

In January 2018, my friend Jérôme Lémal showed me a garage near his house in Andrésy, ‘Le Comptoir de l’Ancienne’. There are three Peugeot 201’s from the years 1929-1931. It’s a revelation! They look like miniature Ford A’s, rather the size of ‘La Petite’!

There is also one, the most beautiful of all, a model 1934, a former Parisian taxi, with taximeter and all … It is in mint state, unlike the other three who need to be ‘revamped’ a little.

I leave Andrésy, but in my subconscious mind a new idea begins to germinate: to make a great trip with a Peugeot 201. I would have been tempted by a travel from North Cape (Norway) to South Cape (South Africa), a distance of 16,000 km. But unfortunately, there are parts of Africa that are too dangerous right now. I am an adventurer, but not suicidal. I decide that it will be a European tour of 20 + 1 countries, in (about) 20,100 km. Honor to the magic number 201! But we must start by finding a 201. First choice: the 1934 taxi. A wonderful car, but really very (too) expensive. And then, God knows why, suddenly her ‘face’ does not appeal to me. I do not like its curved and sloping grille … It will not be that one!

‘Le Comptoir de l’Ancienne’ proposes me another, bright red, convertible. The seats are ugly, one is lacking, and the oldtimer doesn’t seem to be watertight enough for a long trip where we will face probably bad weather. It will not be that one either.

With my friend Raymond Strasser, who knows the old Peugeot’s well, we spend a day looking at several that are for sale. The first is in Belgium. Interesting price, but Raymond discovers too many defects …

A second one, in the Netherlands, is expensive, but very beautiful … from the outside. Body and upholstery are superbly restored. But once on the bridge, we discover pots of yoghurt hanging around to collect the oil that leaks from several places. It will not be that one either.

The third one, more affordable, still in the Netherlands, shows serious defects in the bodywork. One more that I will not buy…

And then there was this little ad in LVA magazine (La Vie de l’Auto). I call the owner, François Jamais, we inspect his 201 near Aix-en-Provence and it is love at first sight: I had found ‘La Charmante’! More on the purchase itself here.

But it is only once I became the new owner of the vehicle, while contemplating its ‘face’ and while installing myself at the wheel and seeing the hood ending with the radiator cap surmounted by its thermometer that suddenly I realize the TRUE reason which pushed me towards this kind of model. But for that, I have to tell you about the ‘Koedoe’ here!
